L-Arginine

Ranking: 3rd

Overall Rating: 8.9/10

L-arginine is a common ingredient in health supplements. This amino acid which is widely used for high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and some other heart health conditions is also believed to have potential to treat erectile dysfunction or ED. Many natural health experts have positioned it as a non-pharmaceutical alternative to popular drugs for ED like sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra).

L arginine is the immediate precursor of the compound nitric oxide which plays a key role in improving blood flow via the dilation of blood vessels. Normally, the human body produces sufficient amounts of this amino acid. But, in some cases, getting it through external means is thought to be useful. This is the main reason for its popularity as an ingredient in health supplements for high blood pressure.

Nitric oxide is also essential for achieving an erection which is why L arginine is considered a potential natural treatment for ED and is among the most popular ingredients in male sexual enhancement supplements.

Does It Work?

Scientific evidence that shows that L-arginine is effective to treat erectile dysfunction ED is very limited. In fact, the studies done on the amino acid have produced varying results. A study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information in 1999 concluded that L arginine only worked as a placebo for treatment of impotence. However, another study by the same organization in 2003 showed that if it is used in combination with Pycnogenol, it can provide significant improvement in male sexual function.

Supplements based on L arginine aren’t subject to the several safety and efficacy regulations that pharmaceutical drugs for ED have to follow which means that it can be safely said that one must take the claims regarding its efficacy for male enhancement with a grain of salt. So, does it work? The truth is that right now it cannot be conclusively stated whether L-arginine can be beneficial for ED or not.
